    Industry News & Developments

High Adolescent Use of AI Chatbots for Mental-Health Advice in the USA

A new study from the RAND Corporation found that around one in eight adolescents and young adults (ages 12-21) in the U.S. reported using AI chatbots for mental-health advice. Among those, two-thirds used them at least monthly - a sign that young people are already turning to AI for emotional support.

Students Lead the Conversation on AI & Wellbeing

The AI & Wellbeing Autumn Forum 2025 at University College London brought together researchers, clinicians, entrepreneurs and investors to discuss the future of AI in wellbeing.

This reflects growing cross-sector collaboration in mental health technology and offers valuable insight into how partnerships, policy and innovation ecosystems are developing around AI in psychiatry.

"Digital Twins" in Mental Health Gaining Ground

The concept of an AI "digital twin" - a personalised simulation of a person's mental state built from longitudinal data - is gaining attention in both the U.S. and U.K.

These early pilots suggest potential for more dynamic, data-driven insights into patient wellbeing over time. For psychiatry platforms, it points toward a future where longitudinal modelling, prediction and simulation could become integral parts of care delivery.

Perspective - The Urgent Need for Safe, Clinically Guided AI

New research from OpenAI reveals that over 1.2 million people each week engage in conversations on ChatGPT indicating intent to harm themselves.

This underlines an urgent truth: patients are already using AI tools for mental-health support - often without clinical oversight. It reinforces the need for validated, ethical and psychiatrist-led AI solutions built with safety, context and compassion at their core.

Recent Reading: Optimising the Front Door of Mental Health Care

A new U.S. perspective piece argues that AI and large language models can best improve mental health access by transforming the early stages of care - screening, assessment, triage and treatment planning.

By automating initial patient assessments, these tools could empower primary care providers and bridge the research-to-practice gap in evidence-based conceptualisations of mental health.

Aisel is already bringing this vision into clinical practice – helping psychiatrists use AI before the first consultation.
